Geocaching, pronounced Geo-Cashing, a term most people haven’t heard of. It’s more or less like treasure hunting with modern technology using GPS. The secret world of Geocaching has been around since 2000, after the upgrade of GPS or Global Positioning System technology. Originally called the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt” and merely just a way to test the true accuracy of GPS tracking devices. Dave Ulmer of Oregon posted his idea and tracking coordinates. His concept, hide a container in the woods and document coordinates with the use of GPS. Log that you’ve found it, leave a treat and take a treat.
The idea is simple and boy is it fun. Spend free time discovering your local area or take a day trip and do an extreme hike to find one. It’s a great way to create memories. See the geocaching made easy steps below.
Step 1: Create an account.
You can sign-up online or download the app with your iPhone or Android. You can also purchase handheld GPS devices for your hunts if you don’t have an iPhone or Android.
Geocaching is membership based, offering a basic membership for free and a premium membership is $9.99 for 3-months and $29.99 for 1-year. I have the basic membership.
Step 2: Find a geocache hunt.
Do your research. Be prepared before going on your cache hunt. Picking a hunt is based on the level of difficulty and terrain you wish to pick in the area you’d like to explore.
Step 3: Geocache.
This is the best part. The hunt. Just simply following to coordinates. It can be a bit tricky. Look for hints if you need to but enjoy exploring.
Step 4: Share your adventure.
Log in at the cache. There will be a notepad and pen or pencil to sign and date. Leave a treat like a coin, a button pen, small souvenir or the like. And don’t forget to take a treat. Place the geocache where you got it. Tell about your experience online.
Today geocaching has spread across the globe with more than 2.5 million treasure hunts. It’s a fun alternative outdoor activity to enjoy solo, as a couple, with friends or family. Try it www.geocaching.com or download the app. Your next adventure is waiting for you.
