I am amazed at how scared folks are when it comes to, not only choosing a paint color but not understanding paint finish.
Here are a few rules to help you:
Rule#1 – Choose a color that makes you smile. You are the one that will have to live with this color (preferably NOT beige) in your space. It should make you feel relaxed and welcome when you enter the room.
Rule #2 – Choosing the color is just the first step. Next is deciphering the finish. The range is from flat, matte, eggshell, pearl, semi-gloss, and for those that are adventurous, high gloss. I am an eggshell, high gloss gal. Side note: The walls MUST be uber smooth for semi and high gloss; otherwise, it will show EVERY imperfection. In contrast, flat will mask the imperfections. If you want something in between, choose eggshell. It is just enough shimmer to add depth to a room.
Rule#3 – Before you hire a professional (unless you are a DYI-er). Do a test sample of the potential color(s), in a 1’x1’ square on the wall. See how the color changes throughout the day. You will be amazed at the transformation!
Rule#4 – Once you have chosen the color and finish, you can happily paint your space. Remember that it is ONLY paint, and you can freely change the color! It is not permanent.
