The best place I ever had fun was during All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas.
A few years ago I got a phone call from one of my girlfriends asking if I was interested in attending all-star weekend. I am a woman who is always up for fun so I decided to join the group. It ended up being 12 of us who went away to Vegas. Although I’ve been to Vegas several times this was going to be my very first stay at the Bellagio. The hotel was absolutely beautiful. Upon check-in we decided to visit the spa in the hotel and get mani-pedis. While we were being pampered we overheard the staff talking about their next client. Beyoncé. And all the women working in the spa were very excited to be attending to Beyoncé.
If you’ve ever been to All-Star Weekend you already know what happened next. For three nights there were parties, mobs of people, celebrities, and regular people throughout the strip. Some of the celebrities had parties which cost over $300 to attend. The most memorable party was thrown by Jamie Foxx. There were so many people in Vegas. I have never seen so many people crammed into a few square miles like this particular weekend. You might wait an hour just to grab a burger at Fatburger and any other place you wanted to eat, the lines were out the door and wrapped around the building. Everyone waited on line. When we visited the mall attached to Caesars Palace Hotel, there were celebrities everywhere. I’m a person who does not usually recognize celebrities but when you see several men walking together who are almost seven feet tall, you have to assume they’re basketball players.
Now I want to share with you the most memorable nights of them all was when I struck up a conversation with a gentleman who was sitting at the bar in the Bellagio. This gentleman and myself we’re both in banking (at the time) so we bonded over work. By the end of the conversation some of my other friends had joined us and we decided that we were going to have a little bit of a drinking contest. I’m not sure who lost. We ended up drinking all the cognac in the bar….and ultimately after three nights, the entire hotel was sold out. I can tell you I have never had an evening like that again. There was also a friendly guy who bought me a bottle of champagne….this was the same bottle I used as a microphone to sing to Jermaine Dupri across a poker table. (That’s probably a story for another day).
Strolling through the casino floor was a sight to see. I recall seeing Gladys Knight at a slot machine puffing on a huge cigar. But that weekend wasn’t all about the celebrities. It was about having a great time with even better friends. There is something speacial that happens when you travel with friends. More than spending a greater time with each other, it was a different time. In Vegas, at least during All-Star Weekend, there are no emails to answer, errands to run, off limit foods or pressing responsibilities. There’s only the weekend. A weekend so grand that the Mayor of Las Vegas went on camera to announce that Vegas will never host another All-Star Weekend. (Vegas was trashed and the fights and riots were out of control).
All-Star weekend was a blast. It was a blur. It was everything in between. I will never forget the trip and the great times which were had with my friends. If you ever have the opportunity to attend, my vote is to go. After all, this is where I had the most fun….EVER.
