There are multiple transportation options when it comes to traveling, there’s really no excuse not to escape. Scared of a plane? Ok, catch a train. Don’t like driving? Take a bus to your destination. Believe it or not you’ve got choices. And with discount sites like and Kayak, Orbitz, Expedia, Cheaptickets, TravelZoo, Priceline and now Groupon it’s easier to track down great deals on airfare, car rental as well as vacation packages.
Fly the Friendly Skies:
The easiest and often times the quickest way to travel to your desired destination. Major airlines like Delta, American Airlines and Air Canada are great but you can’t leave out discount airlines like Southwest, JetBlue, Virgin America and Alaska Airlines are good as well. Delta is my favorite, I generally go directly to their site to book. They tend to have the same prices as the discount websites. In addition to the newsletters I get from my favorite airlines I also use sites like Google Flights and get alerts from SmartTravel Fare Alert and Airfare Watch Dog.
There is nothing like being on your own schedule. You can leave when you want to leave and stop wherever you please. You are your own tour guide. And if you feel like detouring off the beaten path, it’s ok. This is my favorite choice to move about and explore. All you need is a reliable vehicle, access to music and GPS to get you on your way.
Try taking the train instead of plane. Plan a full vacation, driving left to the conductor. Or extend your layover one day and head to a major city to explore. The discovery of the states might surprise you. Amtrak offers destinations to National Parks, Western, Eastern, South/Mid West states as well as Canada. There are all sorts of discounts offered, what’s it to try something new. Check out the site at www.amtrakvacations.com
Rent a RV:
I know, camping. And if you decide on this option, where will you park it at night? How are you going to shower? Where on earth will you travel? To rent a RV check out Cruise America at www.cruiseamerica.com, they have plenty of locations nationwide. Go RVing is a great site for general information and can take you to other sites for details www.gorving.com. Some RV campgrounds offer basic services like electricity and fresh water others have full-service options to add like sewer hookups. And then there is the VIP of mobile RV traveling parks also know as “Gamping” that include Wi-Fi, pools, spas, playgrounds, outdoor activities and rentals, small stores, cafes and fitness facilities in addition to the basics. Finding a campground or RV park is up where you’d like to go and do. Visit www.gocampingamerica.com and they will give locations. Cost for a lot or space depends on where you go and the amenities they offer. Make a reservation to secure a spot. Remember you can camp at National, State and Forest Parks. It’s becoming a popular option to vacation, especially if you have a little extra time on your hands. This will take a bit of planning. The great thing is that people seem to be really friendly and willing to help with questions. Perhaps you’ll consider using an RV next time you travel.
Get on the Bus:
Greyhound, for centuries it has been an alternate way to travel across the U.S. But new bus transportation methods have emerged on the scene, Megabus is one of them. Newer models offer free Wi-Fi, panoramic windows, comfortable seating, charging stations at your seat. It’s a comfortable yet affordable way to get to where you need to go. Don’t knock the bus, get on the bus. Literally.
There are ships porting from all parts of the coastal United States. Offering short trips for two days and as long as 15 days depending on the cruise line. No driving or steering for that matter, just enjoy the ride and activities on board. When it’s time to dock do an activity of choice. Some of the top cruise ships like Royal Caribbean, Disney, Norwegian and Carnival come with different sized fleet and amenities like live entertainment, slides, cinemas, spas and workout facilities come pretty standard. Select ships have ice skating rinks, bumper cars, ropes course, lawn club with real grass and a 4D theater to add in a bit of luxury. Cruising is really a great way to vacation and its rather stress free, another awesome option to travel.
You can go anywhere, see anything and do what you’d like and there are plenty of ways in which to enjoy your vacation excursion. No matter how you choose to get there, just go. There really is nothing stopping you.
