Have you ever been perusing magazines and think “I wish I had skin like that!” You know that super glowy, even-toned, flawless complexion? A lot of us have! Since moving to New York City from Portland, Oregon, my skin has changed tremendously. Oregon is full of clean air, moisture, oxygen, and everything pure. So, you can imagine how coming to a bustling city could throw my skin off; causing more work on my end to keep my complexion flawless and glowing. This is a must have for me as a skin care expert. My skin is my first impression and advertisement!
As women of color, we often have more issues that cause damage to our skin- dark spots, acne, congested pores, uneven color, and just all around dull looking skin! Add NYC pollution in the mix and it would seem that we are all screwed! This is far from the truth.
In the last 15 years of educating clients, I have learned that with a little education and some minor changes in your regimen, flawless skin is easily within your reach!
Here are a few steps you can take for a brighter future (literally)!!
- Get rid of washing your face with soap– no Dove, no Dial, no body wash. Your cleanser should be specific to your skin care needs. If you have dry skin, it should be a creamy cleanser. If you have uneven skin, it should be for evening your pigment and so on. Soaps over dry your skin (even if you are super oily) and leave a film behind that will clog your pores! This is a definite NO-NO!
- WATER! WATER! WATER! But you know this right??? Water is like money. When you have it, you feel good and look good! When it’s gone, all hell breaks loose! Bottom line: Drink it. Your skin & body will be happy!
- Get regular facials. The most important parts of the facial are the exfoliation and the extractions. Usually, your skin care provider can give you an exfoliator that is stronger than the over-the-counter options. This will help remove a portion of the upper layer of skin, which will lead to a more even complexion, diminished dark spots and cleaner skin. Extractions remove all of the dirt and oil that loves to move into your pores making them larger and visible. No free rent here. It’s got to go! You should try to have a professional facial every 4-6 weeks.
- SPF IS A MUST! SPF IS A MUST! Need I say it again? This is the most overlooked part of skincare when dealing with people of color. Anything from SPF 15 to SPF 30 is sufficient and should be applied during the day only. It is very important to protect our skin from sun damage and the residual effect of this. Apply this EVERYDAY!!
If you put these few easy steps in motion, I guarantee you will see results almost immediately! If you need help or want a consultation, I’m here to help!
