Those who are well traveled have been let in on a secret. You cannot afford not to travel. Some say the world is small; others know how large and beautiful this world truly is and have tested this theory. I am a speck on planet Earth, but I desire to know about all the other specks that make up this globe we call home. Travel is limitless. If there is a place, all you need is the will to see it. Imagine that. You can go anywhere you want to go, if even for only a few moments.
Why did we begin to travel?
Travel has been one of the most common experiences to date. Let’s consider that more closely. In our history classes, we learn that people migrated from one area to another often in search of food shelter and opportunities. Traveling from one land to the other is how civilizations grew. Although, when we think of travel these days we don’t necessarily think about spreading a civilization, however, we can’t deny that is how and why many of us are located where we are in the world today.
History has shown us that new lands were inhabited by deciding that travel and seeing what is behind beyond your border are important. Early Portuguese travelers such as, The Ming Dynasty, Christopher Columbus (no matter what you believe he discovered), all knew the value of travel. A person who travels has opportunities that those who stands still does not. Commerce, education, natural resources, information, and technology are all reasons why we travel from one place to another.
Experiencing the culture of someone’s land enriches one’s life. Regardless of your personal beliefs, being in a 50-year-old Mosque, 150-year-old Temple, 300-year-old Roman Catholic Church or 200-year-old Synagogue is enlightening. Although the aforementioned are places of worship, their impression can often be found outside of their doors. I wish I could verbalize the joy and hopefulness I felt as I walked through Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. As the country’s grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers.
Overall, Dubai is one of my most treasured travel destinations. I was fortunate to travel there with friends, and see various parts that make up the United Arab Emirates. The way that the members of the community addressed one another was most noticeable to me. As an American, I have seen a level of entitlement regarding personal rights, which is not taken lightly elsewhere. We have the right to tell someone exactly what we think of them. In Dubai, you wouldn’t think about potentially disrespecting someone by making offensive comments. Also, the crime rate is lower, and the punishments are more severe.
Why do we travel now?
Many people often travel for business purposes, leisure, education, and personal knowledge. Whatever reason dictates my travel, I make it my priority to learn something from this adventure. I have slipped away for a few hours during business trips to engulf myself in my surroundings. I even travel to largely populated cities similar to areas not far from my home that have some major differentiating characters. Outside of business travel, leisure vacations are a top reason to travel. Some people travel to relieve their everyday stressors; some are fortunate enough to travel before they are stressed. Taking a relaxing or adventurous vacation can help refocus your energy and center your body. (Sometimes a recovery day is needed after a very adventurous vacation, so be sure to request that extra day off from work).
Your travel budget
One of the main reasons I hear from people who do not travel is the cost. The costs greatly differ based on the location and category associated with your travel. I understand that not everyone can afford to take a pilgrimage to their Holy Land without significant funding. However, planning travel using a travel agent usually affords one the opportunity to make payments. I have heard of instances where families take out vacation loans to fund trips, but I do not agree that incurring debt at alarming rates is the smart decision.
– Travel benefits your life.
– Those who go, know.
– Budget for your travel.
